As you may have noticed, there are a number of Jiveturtle variants available to the right-hand side of this post. Why you may ask? Well, some people prefer to use/read from different blog engines, so I thought, maybe I'll have different versions created to suit the masses demand. I know not many people would read this blog, since, lets face it, its about me and my adventures, and I know I am not the most exciting person in the world or have anything decent to say, but I thought it would be cool to have the same posts/blog on different blog engines.
Jiveturtle@WordPress blog was generated a while back, because I wanted to try out different blog engines, and see which one would cater my sporadic needs of ease of posting (like posts via email), photo-uploads, video uploads, tagging and customisation of the blog layout (lets face it, it your own blog, and you always want it to look good).
At the time, WordPress was quite basic, with not many features. But on a recent curious visit, I found many new things. One impressive function is the ability to import the posts I made on the Blogger.com engine. In literally minutes, I have the Jiveturtle@WordPress blog updated with all the posts I have made on the Blogger.com engine. I was quite impressed with that.
Another feature I noticed was the ability to add new pages to the WordPress blog. Perhaps they had this before, I don't know, but I thought it was pretty good, and with that I added a page with my CV.
The other great thing was the templates. Almost 60 smooth and cool designs to choose from which, for me, looked really good. Compared to Blogger.com, the templates available at WordPress were much much better. Some templates even had the option to change the header graphic to something more personal to you. Blogger.com, we need more cool templates!
WordPress also offers site statistics, tracking how many users visit your blog and has a widget to add to the main blog page. If numbers is your thing, then this widget will certainly tickle you.
OK, how about the media stuff? Well, at WordPress, there are limitations. First there is three gigabyte limit to the file uploads for your Wordpress blog. This includes pictures and videos you have uploaded for your blog pages. There is an option to buy more space, but at prices of $20 (lower end) for an additional five gigabytes, and for one year only. At Blogger.com, in my experience so far, I haven't met any limitations to the number of photos or videos I can upload.
So far, I think WordPress is coming along nicely. It would be nice to see the features which the WordPress engines has on the Blogger.com engine (or vice-versa), things like the ability to add additional pages and having more templates to choose from to make my blog look a bit more sophisticated and individual. For now WordPress has not swayed me over there yet, but I will keep it updated via the oh-so-cool import function.
Now, onto Jiveturtle@Livespaces for next time! :-)
Which blog engine you use or prefer? Let me know.
