Bonfire Night

Tonight, many Britons will celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, where a group of conspritors aim to blow up the House of Lords.

How do the celebrations go? Well there would normally be a gathering of wood into a big pile. This big pile of wood will be used for the bonfire, which will be lit in evening in the of burning a effigy of Guy Fawkes, one of the conspiritors who was caught in the cellars of the House of Lords. On top of that, there would normally a display of fireworks. As a kid, my brother and I would always look out of our bedroom windows which faces the back garden of a pub near our house.

The Hop Pole pub used to have a bonfire celebration every year, and we would watch the bonfire burning brightly in the pub's garden and watch the fireworks when they are set off by the owner of the pub. Its always a busy night, with children playing with sparklers and having savoury pies to eat as they watch the fireworks and the burning of a Guy Fawkes effigy.

I particularly remember this date since, firstly because we had to study it at secondary school, and secondly, its two nights after Amelie was born in 2004. I was in the babies ward holding a two day old Amelie watching the fireworks in the sky from various locations from the baby ward window. It was as though it was celebrating Amelie's birth.

They don't celebrate Bonfire Night in Taiwan, so I'll just have to make do with checking the web for firework displays. If you are all going to a bonfire tonight, make sure you keep your pets indoors, wear something warm, and most of all, have fun!

Lunch with Grandma Ng - Japanese Style

For lunch, after praying at Grandpa's resting place, we set off to a local Japanese restuarant which Grandma likes very much. I went for the roasted eel in teriyaki sauce with rice. It was really really nice, and could have had another two bowls. Grandma's favourite dish was the barbecued squid. We also have pan-fried dumplings, beef rice-don, and my Aunt ordered her favourite sushi rolls. Really enjoyed that meal! More photos here .

Its been a while!

Hey all, sorry, had been away for so long.  Sometimes have so many things going on and so many thoughts, not sure what to write. Life update is that we've moved out of the in-laws place, and renting an apartment in the city.  It's not brand new. No lifts, and we live on the top floor, but it's my home now. Just recently been in hospital for stomach ulcers causing internal bleeding.  Nightmare, when you wasn't allowed to eat or drink for 4 days.  But I'm back home now, but only this morning, I discovered I now have a gout attack.  FML. Anyway, life continues to surprise or annoy me in new and fascinating ways. Mimi is still with us by the way, always staying loyal and guarding. Until next time.

Homeward Bound

Hello again, thought I'd give an update of what's going on in my mundane life. After chatting with my wife, We will be moving back to my parents's home in Manchester (well Ashon-under-Lyne to be precise). We feel it would be better for her to have people around like our friends and family should anything happen. Plus I get to hang out with my friends again! As with my work, I will still be working at my current job in London. The plan is that I will be travelling to London to work in the office for three days (Tuesday to Thrusday) and work from home in Manchester for the other two days. I felt it was a good compromise, and I'll get something back for the travel and accommodation costs (some but not all), plus I'll will be stilling working and earning the dough. Now we're in the middle of putting stuff in boxes ready for the big move in mid-June. Dug out a lot of stuff that we don't need, so we'll be holding a car boot sale to make some ca...
